Badges and Awards

Recognising participation and achievement

We recognise participation and achievement through awarding badges which are sewn onto the uniform. The types of badges are common across all the sections, and some types of badges are exactly the same across them all.

The Top Awards

In each section there is a ‘top’ award which members aim to achieve by the time they move up to the next section. These are the 6 levels of the Chief Scout’s Awards, and finally the Queen’s Scout Award.

Challenge Awards

In Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts there are a set of Challenge Awards that go towards achieving the Chief Scout’s Award:

Staged Activity Badges

A range of ‘staged’ activity badges – awards for participating in different types of activities – that span all of our sections, allowing young people to make progress on them throughout their time in Scouting. An example of this is the Nights Away staged activity badge, with badges for 1 night’s residential followed by 5, 10, 15, 20, 35, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 nights away!

Activity Badges

Each section from Squirrels to Explorers have a set of activity badges specific to the section:

Leadership stripes

Starting in Beavers, young people can take on leadership roles in their own section. There are three badges, with two used in Beavers and Cubs, and a third used in Scouts and Explorers:

Moving On Award

When a young person reaches the end of their time in each of our sections, we help young people make the move to the next section through completing the Moving On Award:
