Becoming and being a Scout

A worldwide movement

Scouting isn’t just a local club, it’s a movement of Scouts across the globe. When you join the 1st Whiston Scout Group you will become part of either our:

  • Squirrel Drey
  • Beaver Colony
  • Cub Pack
  • Scout Troop
  • Explorer Scout Unit
  • the Scout Network
  • an Adult Volunteer

You will also become a member of St. Helens Scout DistrictMerseyside Scout County, the North West England Scout Region, UK Scout Association, and be part of the global Scouting Movement.

Keeping us moving

We are funded by the contributions of our members through regular membership donations and donations for specific events. We also undertake different types of fundraising to develop the group.

We recommend a minimum donation of £15 per month, per member to make sure we can keep operating. You are more than welcome to donate more if you wish, but we also appreciate this might be challenging for some. Please speak to your section leader to let them know how much you will regularly donate to help ensure we can keep running our weekly activities.

For specific day trips or residentials, we will advise the recommended donation per person to cover the cost of each event.

First Four Weeks

During your first 4 weeks you’ll get stuck-in with our activities and work towards gaining your Membership Award. You’ll learn a little bit about Scouting, including your Promise, the people in your section, our traditions and a little bit of history.

You’ll become a member of Scouting at your investiture when you’ll make your Promise, be presented with your ‘necker’ and your first set of badges.

Badging Up

Your first set of badges will include the purple Membership Award worn by all Scouts.

You’ll also receive a “Whiston & Huyton” group and/or Explorer Scout Unit name tape, plus your “St Helens” District and “Merseyside” County badge. We ask these are sewn onto your uniform quickly, so you don’t lose them!
